The Annual General Meeting of the Lanark Heritage Preservation Society, which will be happening on Wednesday, June 29th at the Lanark Civitan Club (7:00 p.m.). The meeting is open to the community.
We’re lucky to have Linda Seccaspina as a speaker; she will talk about “Appreciating Heritage”. Linda is both a Councilor in Carleton Place and a long-time writer on local heritage – including the history of the Kitten Mill building – so she will speak from an interesting dual perspective.
Her presentation will be followed by an update on the current situation and the actions recently taken by the LHPS and the Township: on June 13, the LHPS posted a petition on this website asking Council to employ its powers it to require the owner of the building to make it safe.
The next day, the Township’s Chief Building Officer issued an order to the owner to “…demolish/remove or repair the buildings to a state that would render the building safe; to provide a report from a professional engineer outlining the applicability of works to be completed to render the building safe and to obtain a permit for any construction/demolition as is applicable under the OBA.”
A response is required by July 22.
That’s really good news – but it’s not yet action. It will be up to the new Board to follow Council after the July 22 deadline and ensure that the necessary changes actually happen.
The audience will then be asked to offer comments and ideas and provide suggestions for future Board action. Nominations to the Board will be taken from the floor and all attendees will take part in the vote.
